(* - indicates sermon stands alone and is not part of any sermon series) "Lessons After Supper" (13-part Lenten / Easter sermon series beginning in John 13 with Jesus' final instructions to the disciples after the Last Supper) 1/3/10 The Full Extent of Love (John 13: 1 - 17) The meal had been served...and the Master gave a lesson about service that rocked the disciples' worlds. 1/10/10 Jesus Knows (John 13: 18 - 30) Was Jesus aware of all that was going on around Him? Was He aware of the betrayer? Was it all a surprise to Him? According to John's account along with the rest of Scripture, we can be confident that Jesus knew...and He always knew. 1/17/10 Yet Will I Trust Him * (Psalm 46: 1 - 3 and other selected Scriptures in response to Haitian Earthquake) There are times in our lives where circumstances literally shake us to our foundations. What do we do in those times? How should we respond as Christians when seemingly unexplainable tragedies like the earthquake in Haiti and our own personal "earthquakes" occur? 1/24/10 Love...the Lord's Way (John 13: 31 - 38) When it comes to love, everyone has their own idea of how to define it. But as Christians, we are called to have a specific kind of love that we cannot limit to our own definitions. For Christians, we must love...but in the Lord's way. 1/31/10 The Promise (John 14: 1 - 4) The disciples were indeed troubled deep in their souls...after all, the Messiah told them He was leaving them soon. And Jesus had told them on many occasions that He would be killed. This was not how the disciples pictured the Messiah so it caused them great distress. But Jesus made a promise to them and to all believers that should cause peace in our souls no matter the situation. 2/7/10 Totally Inclusive Exclusivity (John 14: 5 - 6) To say that there is such a thing as exclusive or absolute truth nowadays...well, some are so offended by that statement that they might as well think you were swearing at them. But Jesus was clear that there is such a thing as absolute truth when He said there was only ONE way to heaven. 2/14/10 The Real Power of Faith (John 14: 7 - 15) A lot of the tele-heretics...I'm mean, televangelists who abuse Scripture to an alarming degree can take passages and put them through the filter of what they want to believe. When they do that, however, they do not proclaim the truth of God's Word. In this section of John, Jesus Himself explains what the real power of faith is...and that source is NOT in the power of our "words of faith." 2/21/10 If We Love Jesus... (John 14: 15 - 26) The disciples were understandably concerned...Jesus said He was leaving them. But He did make a promise to them that they would not be alone. And once a believer receives the gift of the Holy Spirit, there are four blessings and one challenge we receive as well. 2/28/10 Got Peace? (John 14: 27 - 31) Not only did Jesus leave the disciples with the promise of the Holy Spirit coming to dwell in them, He also left them another gift...the gift of His perfect peace, the peace that surpasses all understanding. And ALL believers should feel that peace. 3/7/10 Attached to the Life-Giving Roots (John 15: 1 - 8) As Jesus walked with His disciples on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane, He continued to teach. And in this passage from John 15, Jesus gave the disciples an important lesson in staying connected to the right power source. 3/14/10 From Roots to Fruit (John 15: 4, 8 - 16) Jesus spoke a lot about remaining in Him. After all, apart from Him, we can do nothing; we will bear no fruit at all if we go off in our own power apart from Him. But, when we DO remain attached, what exactly is the fruit we are supposed to bear for Him? 3/21/10 In the Context of Love (John 15: 9 - 17) Jesus spoke a great deal about love throughout His three years on earth. In fact, the instructions He gave to the disciples after supper were filled with lessons about love. And, in John 15: 9 - 16, all that Jesus spoke of was informed by the context of love. 3/28/10 The Expectation of Suffering as a Christian (John 15: 18 - 25) It's not the best "recruiting" tool or method...but it is the truth: Christians will suffer just for being Christians. But why??? 4/1/10 Necessary Witness Maundy Thursday Service (John 15: 26 - 27 & 18: 26 - 27) What is the duty of a witness? How can you and I who lived so long after Jesus possibly be considered witnesses? 4/4/10 Why Did Jesus Have to Rise? Easter Sunday Service (John 20: 1 - 10) Many ask why Jesus had to die on the Cross and why couldn't He have paid for our sins another way. But another question that is often ignored (although not by the Bible) is why Jesus had to rise from the dead. What a perfect question to ask and answer on Resurrection Sunday! "Perspectives through the Looking Glass" (30-part sermon series on Ecclesiastes) 4/11/10 The Circle of Life (Ecclesiastes 1: 1 - 11) At first glance (and maybe second and third glance too), Ecclesiastes can seem like a depressing book to read. But when we realize Solomon's perspectives as he looks back over his life, his statements tell us the importance of remaining close to God and how we will view the world if we don't. 4/18/10 Learning Curve (Ecclesiastes 1: 12 - 18) Solomon was the wisest man on the face of the earth. But where did that knowledge get him? What did he learn in trying to make sense of life through knowledge gained under the sun? 4/25/10 Trying to Catch the Fleeting Wind (Ecclesiastes 2: 1 - 11) Sometimes, you might think that Solomon lived in our day because of the way he wrote about everyday life. Further proof that there is nothing really new under the sun since we today sometimes engage in the same trivial pursuits that Solomon did so many years ago. 5/2/10 The Wisest Wisdom (Ecclesiastes 2: 12 - 17) "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." (Proverbs 14: 12) We humans depend upon our own intellect and understanding to gain wisdom. The search seems right to us. But when we go with our human wisdom alone, it leads nowhere as Solomon concludes in Ecclesiastes. So what then is the wisest wisdom? 5/9/10 Perspectives on Work (Ecclesiastes 2: 18 - 26) For some people, work is their entire life...even when they have a family. They find their meaning and value in the work they do and search for achievement, accomplishment and a good reputation in their work. Solomon knew a lot about this subject and told the proper perspectives people should have regarding the work they do. 5/16/10 Our Times Are in His Hands (Ecclesiastes 3: 1 - 11) There are seasons of life and they go on and on...and none of us can control them. So who can? 5/23/10 Square Pegs and God-Shaped Holes (Ecclesiastes 3: 11 - 22) We all have yearnings...and Solomon addresses four yearnings common to man. 5/30/10 Finding Contentment (Ecclesiastes 4: 1 - 6) We Americans never seem to be content with anything. It is not a new phenomenon or something peculiar to us today because Solomon told of the discontentment in his day and where we as children of God should find our contentment. 6/6/10 If a Man Falls Down in the Forest, Does Anyone Hear It? (Ecclesiastes 4: 7 - 16) While this passage has often been used as a wedding sermon and it is O.K. to apply the passage to a marriage, there is much more to it than that. This passage speaks to us about our need to have strength in numbers and also about the tie that truly binds all Christians together. 6/13/10 Standing Before an Awesome God (Ecclesiastes 5: 1) A great many people say that they believe in God...but do they actually give Him the respect and praise and worship He deserves? 6/20/10 The Vows We Make (Ecclesiastes 5: 1 - 7) Words are very important, especially when we are making vows before the God of the universe. 6/27/10 Money-Matters (Ecclesiastes 5: 8 - 20) In our very capitalistic, seemingly money-hungry society, this message could not be more relevant. Solomon not only addresses the problems with obsession over money but also the solution and proper attitude we should have towards the monetary blessings we have. 7/4/10 The Enjoyment of Life (Ecclesiastes 6: 1 - 12) Solomon knew what it was to be blessed...and he also knew what it was to be miserable about life without God. In what I believe is a somewhat autobiographical section of Ecclesiastes, Solomon tells us what to avoid so we are not miserable in this life. 7/18/10 Is Eternity on Your Mind? (Ecclesiastes 7: 1 - 6) If someone tells you that they have never given even one thought to what awaits us when we die, they are probably lying. Even if they are wrong in their belief, everyone wonders what will happen. While not clear at first, Solomon tells us in a very interesting section of Scripture that we should all have eternity on our minds. 7/25/10 Much More Than Simple Wisdom (Ecclesiastes 7: 7 - 12) Solomon's wisdom did not come out of a fortune cookie...no simple wisdom here. And yet, he gives some very practical wisdom here for daily living and shows the benefit of wisdom itself. 8/1/10 Consider What God Has Done (Ecclesiastes 7: 13 - 14) The thoughts of mankind are often wrapped up in the daily concerns of life, sometimes to the point where not much thought is given towards God and all that He has done. Solomon tells us very clearly why our thoughts should be on God a lot more than they are. 8/8/10 Wisdom for Right Living (Ecclesiastes 7: 15 - 22) There are a lot of passages that could be misinterpreted very easily to say what we want them to say. This passage is one of them. But after careful study it becomes clear that Solomon is giving us some wisdom for right, daily living. 8/29/10 Guarding Against Sinful Schemes and Desires (Ecclesiastes 7: 23 - 8: 1) The world can be a buffet of delights...but many of those delights are sinful ones that even true believers can fall into if they do not guard themselves. King David is an example of someone who looked on the other side of the fence and fell into sin...and the apple did not fall far from the tree with his son Solomon. But a lifetime's worth of experience is what Solomon gives us in this passage, warning believers of the dangers into which we can fall. |
